Punishment Vs. Rehabilitation: A Proposal
on Revising Sentencing Practices
After reading
this article and analyzing
the
suggested revisions on our current
justice system, I believe
there are many
factors to consider
as to why
change the current
punishment method. The article
mentions four main
objectives that should
be met by
our criminal justice
system: deterrence, punishment, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. I think
that our system
currently lacks three
of those objectives
which are the
deterrence, incapacitation
and rehabilitation. The current
system focuses on
just punishing the
criminals without taking
into consideration that
by their cold
behavior, they are causing
the criminals to
hate the system
and rebel more
against it. They don’t
focus on educating
them and showing them why
their behavior is bad.
They don’t even bother to
figure out what
is happening inside
their criminal minds. They
need to have counselors that
are willing to
talk to the
inmates and really
get deep into
the roots of
the problem. If they
don’t do so, they
will end up
in a circle
that will end
up where it
started. The criminals will go
back to their
behavior. The article also
mentions how by
focusing on a
less time sentence
and more parole
time might help
the criminals instead
of just locking
them up more time.
It will
also cut back
on the taxpayer
funds that are
needed to keep
the jails running. They
can even create a
program that will
enable the offenders
to work while
in prison. Work outside the
bars that is. They
can be allowed
to work with
the community on
real jobs. It is
a risk, but it
will incorporate them
in the community
versus pushing them
away.
